Building Permits

You are REQUIRED to have a building permit for any Residential or Commercial building inside the city limits.

Work Exempt from Permits
Building:
  • One-story detached accessory structures used as tool and storage sheds, playhouses and similar uses provided the floor area does not exceed 120 square feet.
  • Fences not over 6 feet high.
  • Retaining walls not over 4 feet in height measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall, unless supporting a surcharge.
  • Water tanks supported directly upon grade if the capacity does not exceed 5000 gallons and the ratio of height to diameter or width does not exceed 2 to 1.
  • Sidewalks and driveways
  • Painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, countertops, and similar finish work
  • Prefabricated swimming pools that are less than 24 inches deep
  • Swings and other playground equipment
  • Windows awnings supported by an exterior wall which do not project more than 54 inches from the exterior wall and do not require additional support
  • Re-roofs of residences (no more than two roof coverings allowed - tear offs required if two or more layers of roofing exists)
  • Ordinary repairs to the structure, however not to include the cutting away of walls, partitions, structural or load-bearing supports, or rearrangement of parts of a structure affecting the egress requirements
Repairs & Maintenance:
  • Mechanical - portable heating, ventilation & cooling units. Replacement of minor parts that does not alter approval of equipment or make such equipment unsafe.
  • The clearing of stoppages or the repairing of leaks in pipes, valves or fixtures, and the removal and reinstallation of water closets, provided such repairs do not involve or require the replacement or rearrangement of valves, pipes or fixtures.

Swimming Pool Permit Requirement

 

The Town of Estill Springs would like to remind all property owners and residents within the Estill Springs city limits that a permit is required before installing any swimming pool, whether it is:
  • An above-ground swimming pool, or
  • An in-ground swimming pool.

This permit requirement helps ensure that all swimming pools comply with applicable zoning, building, and safety regulations.

No swimming pool installation may begin until the required permit has been obtained from the Town of Estill Springs.

Failure to obtain the required permit before installation will result in a penalty of double the required permit fee, in accordance with the Town of Estill Springs' ordinances.
